Years ago, I read about a woman who was taken hostage by guerrillas in the jungles of Colombia. She had a relationship with one of her captors. She got pregnant and she had an emergency cesarean section performed. I believed she lost the baby.
The story inspired me to make this sculpture. She is the tree in the jungle and the rocks at her feet represent the guerrillas keeping her. The red is the blood for the cesarean section.
I would like it more, if I didn’t make her look so manish and if I hadn’t made the cesarean look like a mouth.
